Dennis Oppenheim was a unique artist who tried out many art styles. His work covered performance art and conceptual art as well as Earth and body art and installation. He is originally from Electric City and Washington and was raised in Honolulu. He moved to New York in 1966 and became one of the most prominent figures in American Conceptual and Land Art.

Performance Art

Oppenheim became interested performance art to explore the limitations of the human body. Oppenheim was one of the first to practice this form. He also joined a group that used durational actions in late 1960s to explore the limits of their bodies as well as the boundaries they have with the world. These forms were used to explore gender, sexuality, identity, and exploitation of his psyche.

He is best known for his outdoor sculptures, created through interventions into urban and natural environments, often known as 'land art' or 'earthworks'. These works were part of the Minimalist movement. This movement emphasized the physical characteristics of art and the surrounding environment and was less concerned with defining or displaying objects than it was about rethinking their purpose and nature.

Critics may find it difficult to assess his work because of its complex mix of political, aesthetic and social considerations. He was a pioneer for meta-art and was widely considered a visionary. His diverse views sometimes exasperated his critics.

Earthworks

Oppenheim altered and manipulated elements of landscapes such as snow, soil, and ice in his early earthworks. These elements would eventually succumb to the natural forces that evaporation would cause and then disappear completely. This approach was inspired by the work Robert Smithson (1938-73), Walter de Maria (1935) and Michael Heizer. It was a major contribution to the Land art movement that emerged in the USA and England in late 1960s.

Oppenheim's early earthworks, such the Annual Rings (1968), were meant to inspire wonder and awe at nature's grandeur. These projects were executed in the mountains in Ecuador and in the Midwestern United States to reflect his love for landscape and nature.

Oppenheim's work later on, such as his whimsical and large-scale public sculpture, was influenced by Earthworks. These pieces are a combination of sculpture and architecture. They often use common building materials such steel, concrete, and wood.

This group organized demonstrations and workshops that promoted economic and political reforms. He was also a founder member of the International Association for the Visual Arts.
